There is enormous power in a surge of rushing water. If you have ever witnessed the jet of water released when a power station opens up all the sluice gates, then you will understand the power that is unleashed. If you haven't seen this, then we recommend a visit to the Finnfors Kraftverksmuseum, where you will be able to experience this powerful force at close hand.
The power station at Finnfors was the first one in Skellefteå, built over a hundred years ago. It is now a museum showing the development of hydro-electric power. A photographic exhibition has images of the power station and life in the village from the time. The jugend design of the building itself is worth a visit. The town of Skellefteå undertook a huge risk at the time by allocating funds that equalled all of the town's budget, but it turned out to be a wise investment. The hydro-electric power generated allowed the growth of both the town and local industries. Several more stations have been added and now the company that runs them, Skellefteå Kraft, has become one of Sweden's largest producers of electricity. In and around Finnfors are opportunities to discover the countryside and wander along historical trails. Fresh bread is served in the local café and the at museum you can test various power and energy experiments in the "Teknikboa". Fun for all ages.
